President Obama just appointed a Latina transgender woman, Raffi Freedman-Gurspan, to the role of White House LGBT liaison. Reportedly this is the first trans person to take the job since the office was created in 1995. Last year, she became the first openly transgender White House official when she took on the role of director of outreach and recruitment for the personnel office. Her job now includes being the associate director for public engagement–meaning she will be the main responsible for coordinating communication between the White House and LGBT groups. The move comes in an atmosphere in which advocates say trans women of color are facing a high risk of violence.
